Located in Milwaukee, the Beck and Pauli Company was best known for the printing of panoramic city views. Partners and German immigrants, Clemens J. Pauli (1835-1896) and Adam Beck (1847- 1922) were in partnership for only nine years (1878-1887), but their output remains historically significant. The maps remain in public and private collections today but the reverse engravings on stone were destroyed soon after the printing of maps. These maps cost about 2.00 in 1883 which was a significant amount of money at that time. Many, if not most maps, were done on known and prominent cities and towns along the railroads or cities with a huge draw. Glendale, Montana was off the beaten path in 1883 but was considered a very promising mining camp that was destined to grow. This mining community was gone 30 years after the completion of this map. The original map was done in charcoal color. This map has been enhanced with color.

This is another edited version of the map. It has different borders and color editing. This is the map I printed to hang on my wall.

Colorized map of Glendale, Montana 1883

This is my original and unedited map. Many of these were cut down to size in order to fit them into frames. 4 known copies of this map exist. The Museum in Dillon has one, a Beaverhead County rancher who recently passed away has one, I have the two remaining maps. (One of which came from the Turner/Armstrong estate). I am sure there are other maps out there but none that have come into the radar so far.

The map below is the result of much research done by the former Glendale site, Glendalemt.org. They researched and added a couple columns of landmarks along with the corresponding map with the buildings numbered to match the legend.  Please excuse the over sized water mark.
